The Happy Prince’s tale takes us back in time to discover the story of Markus, the Happy Prince whose kingdom’s noble-folk, have left the people of his town to suffer in poverty. In comes the self-absorbed and shallow swallow, Fidel! Having been vain enough to fall in love with a river reed, Fidel has missed the chance to migrate south for the winter, so he takes shelter in the shadow of the beautiful, gold leafed, jewel encrusted statue of the prince. Their conversation leads Fidel to admit to the prince that his city is not all beauty and light, that in fact there are some sad and tragic stories to be seen in this cold winter, involving some selfish members of the town council and an evil workhouse owner. No longer a ‘Happy’ Prince, Markus sets Fidel the task of stripping him of his fine gold and jewels in order to take them to those in great need. Happily, Markus’s gifts restore hope and prosperity, but in the process Fidel succumbs to the cold of the winter.
Thankfully the story does not end there, the now ugly prince Markus and the frozen Fidel are restored to life by the wish of a young girl, and everyone lives happily ever after.
The Happy Prince is brought to life with singing, dancing as well as Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop & Contemporary dance. Performed by over 100 students aged 4-11yrs from the Junior Department of Hartley School of Performing Arts.
Suitable for all ages.
